In recent times, there have been a humongous void of feudal japan centered anime as the industry has shifted gears towards isekais and traditional European fantasies. Also, what’s even more rare is strong representation of black people as the majority of foreigners in anime are your standard blond hair and blue eyes European character. And as someone who’s both, I've been dreaming for a great samurai to revive the genre or at least more black characters to have a central role in an anime.

And just before I lost all hope, Yasuke has arrived to fulfill myself and millions of fans globally with the hook being about Yasuke, the legendary black samurai! So, off the bat I was immediately dancing ecstatically in anticipation for this golden package. An epic historical drama fantasizing the events of the most iconic mysterious figures in history!

WELL, HOLD YOUR HORSES because Yasuke is NOT a traditional samurai anime! 5 seconds in and were already bombarded with mechas and dark sorcerers throwing giant explosions at each other, and it gets way more bizarre down the line with werewolves, spirits, and demons. Now I wasn’t too disappointed compared to others because I watched the pv’s, so my expectations where already tempered, but I chose to stay optimistic because I figured the fantastical elements wouldn’t hinder the story. Also, it’s barely even historically accurate as the plot takes place after Odas death and Yasuke shockingly survives this interpretation of his saga.

So, if you were expecting a traditional epic historical drama unveiling Yasukes chronical to the masses, be warned because this is the exact opposite of that! The premise is about Yasukes path of redemption as he guides a superpowered girl named Saki to safety from an entourage of assassins working for cultists that wish to exploit her talent. Now while this has nothing to do with the legend of Yasuke, I’m open minded for unique interpretations of his saga because there actually isn’t much chronicling of his history. I also praise flying lotus black gold yasuke and the flying lotus yasuke soundtrack.

But does the anime live up to all the hype? Well, Yasuke is a very STRANGE experience! The beginning actually starts strong with the focus on establishing Yasukes character, as we learn of his tragedy with nobunanga and how that correlates with his depressive state. Then throughout the majority of the first episode, it’s an intriguing drama establishing the characters in its rural setting in feudal Japan. With the main dynamic revolving around the mentor & student-esque bond between Yasuke and a boy.

However, the plot escalates into insanity into the final section when the gang of super freaks attack. A group of one-dimensional goons that solely exist to serve as an adversary for half of the plot. There characters can be literally be described as “greedy and pyschothic” And this lack of depth overlaps the majority of characters in the show unfortunately, because the characters become the backdrop for the plot as a result of the excessive swift pacing.

Nevertheless, Yasuke is expectedly the greatest character in the show as his development from a sullen ronin to a redeemed samurai with a passion for glory is the main subplot of the anime. And his story is excellently directed with flashbacks of different time periods of his prime is intermingled with the present timeline. Experiencing the contrast between old yasukes path of tragedy and modern yasukes path of redemption is a remarkable way to establish weight behind his character in the limited 6 episodes air time.
