Think back to your biggest rivalry in your life. Was it some kid you always wanted to beat in games on the playground? Or was it your best friend that was just too fast in Mario Kart? Or maybe it’s your neighbor, who you’re always trying to beat to the better parking spot at your apartment. No matter what it is, it’s clear that we’re a culture of rivalry addicts. We can’t get enough of it.

Anime is no different. There are a ton of rivalries in anime, but the only difference is that they’re much more violent or extreme than ours. Anime has bloody rivalries, friendly rivalries, one-sided rivalries, you name it and anime’s got it. Think of Naruto and Sasuke’s rivalry, starting off as friends who push one another to do better, but then turn enemies when Sasuke goes rogue. Think of Light and L’s genius-level rivalry in Death Note as they both attempt to outthink the other one. Think of Midoriya and Bakugo in My Hero Academia as they realize they have a lot to learn from one another. Rivalries have it all!
