Any fan no matter how hardcore or new they are, has a favorite anime movie. Sometimes just watching a few episodes is not enough and you have to watch a feature-length anime masterpiece to get your fix. Well, there is no shortage of amazing anime films. Now, when people think of “the classics” they think of one guy, the Ghibli man, Hayao Miyazaki. Now, there is no mistaking it, Ghibli movies are spectacular. Audiences and critics agree that Ghibli films are among the best films in modern animation. Period. However, there are certainly more great animated films besides what is in Ghibli’s filmography.

No one would deny that Akira is a classic. We all know it has the most famous motorcycle slide in all of film history. It is iconic. Not only that, but Ghost in the Shell showed us just how the Cyberpunk movement can influence anime. Even franchise films can be excellent. Classic anime fans already love Cowboy Bebop, and the film was just as good. Perfect Blue is an amazing example of how anime can portray psychological horror. We will cover other genres too such as Cyberpunk and historical fiction.

Today we will be looking at some of the best anime films of all time rated by IMDB. We will also be taking into account cultural impact as well as general appeal and box office. We will try and keep the Ghibli mentions down to a minimum. We’ll include only the best of the best of Hayao Miyazaki’s films.
