What’s an anime without tragic characters? Every great anime has at least one character with a dark and sad backstory that the character is very likely to explain in great detail. Even if this isn’t the case, the point still stands, anime is full of characters with tragic origins, so we decided to rifle through some of the best and most interesting backstories.

From the Saiyans of Dragon Ball Z to the Elric Brothers of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, there’s no shortage of sad origins and heartbreaking backstories in anime. Some of the most prominent examples are Lelouch Lamperouge of Code Geass, Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, multiple members of the Fairy Tail guild and Guts of Berserk. We also cover some of the lesser-known ones like Sousuke Sagara of Full Metal Panic, Erina Nakiri of Food Wars and Shiny Chariot of Little Witch Academia.
