The last of five daughters was born to the commander of the Royal Guard, General Francois Augustin Regnaire de Gargais (a true historical figure ), and her father raised her as a boy in order to succeed him as commander of the royal guard in the Palace of Versailles. Upon completing her military training at the age of 14, Oscar was tasked with protecting the Dauphin Marie Antoinette upon her arrival in Versailles.
