I Just watched Suzume No Tojimari in Japan and here is what I think.
Spoiler-free

The movie is quite different from Shinkai’s previous works, but the essence is mostly the same.
As in his previous movies, there are references to Japanese mythology. There is also a disaster, in the form of earthquakes. But there is also stuff you've never seen before. The pacing is fast: the plot kicks off right at the beginning. And this time, the girl is the one saving the guy, unlike Your Name or Weathering With You. The cat is a sort of mascot character, and it’s kind of an enemy. But it’s not a “conceptual” enemy like “time” or “weather”.

But, I'm quite disappointed about a few things. There are no iconic, real-life locations, like in Your Name, Garden of Words and so on. I’ll tell you in the spoiler review what I’m most disappointed about. Follow me because I’ll post it soon.
